Why Gen Zers Succeed as Insurance Agents

April 08, 2025

If you’re a young professional, you know that your generation sees their jobs differently than their Millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer colleagues. You have different goals for your career and priorities for your future.

A lot of the traits that could set you up for success as an insurance agent are common to Generation Z. Here are some of Gen Z’s values and why they align with our agent opportunity.

Flexibility Is a Priority

Most professionals in earlier generations had to work from 9 to 5 in an office, surrounded by the people, equipment and resources they needed to do their jobs. But technological advances and the rapid acceleration of remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic mean that’s not always the case anymore.

With a cell phone and a laptop, you can work as an insurance agent from just about anywhere. That means you might work in the office some days, from home on others and even remotely some of the time.

This flexibility also means you can care for your clients the way they like. Your older clients may appreciate you coming to meet them face-to-face. Your clients who are closer to your age may want to meet over video and follow up via text.

Transparent Leadership Is Non-Negotiable

Older employees likely experienced a hierarchical workplace, along with a corporate culture where you get ahead by following a leader’s orders, even if you may not understand or agree with them.

Gen Z differs from this because they value open communication from leaders and clarity about the direction they’re taking. At Farm Bureau, we know the value of having everyone in the organization providing input and understanding where we’re headed.

Putting Technology to Work

Some older colleagues may be hesitant to learn or use new technology. They may be comfortable with the processes and systems they have in place.

Gen Z has grown up utilizing technology. They value what it adds to life. They are digital natives and put technological tools to work. That includes embracing the internet to find information, save time, focus on building your business and growing connections with clients.

Making a Difference Is a Must

Older generations may have come up seeing their purpose as separate from their job. Younger people are more likely to intertwine the two. As an insurance agent, you’re a vital part of your community. You’re helping your friends, family and neighbors protect themselves from financial struggles and giving them peace of mind. Your work is an integral part of your purpose.

Control Over Your Income and Future

People in earlier generations may have been satisfied with an annual raise and the chance at a promotion every few years. You want more. Gen Z want to count on themselves and their chosen team to build their business, where there’s a clear correlation between hard work and financial success.

Seeing the Opportunity Ahead

Insurance might seem like something older generations rely on. But as Gen Z moves forward in life, their peers will need to protect their cars, homes, businesses and families. As an insurance agent, they’ll see you as someone who understands their concerns and can help them find the solutions they need. Your business can take advantage of the opportunities that come along as your generation matures.
